The Shugart

The Shugart is Seagate Technology’s Singapore Design Centre, a S$100 million integrated R&D and office facility at 26 Ayer Rajah Crescent in the One-North district. Named after Seagate co-founder Alan Shugart, the building spans a six-storey podium and a nine-storey tower, with a net lettable area of approximately 40,880 sqm, and houses over 900 employees engaged in R&D for 2.5-inch small form-factor hard drives, hybrid drives, firmware, and related storage technologies.

As a combined research, design, and office facility rather than a conventional commercial building, the project needed to accommodate specialised R&D lab spaces alongside standard office floors within a single podium and tower configuration, while meeting the operational and environmental requirements of high-specification technology R&D use. The building achieved Green Mark Platinum certification, the highest tier under Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority green building rating scheme.

Integrating specialised R&D and lab infrastructure with standard office accommodation across a six-storey podium and nine-storey tower, while meeting Green Mark Platinum performance targets, required coordination between architectural, structural, and MEP models to resolve the differing servicing, loading, and environmental control demands of lab versus office floors within a single, cohesive building envelope.
