Jewel Changi is a world-class feat of engineering, headlined by a 14,000-square-metre glass-and-steel gridshell. The construction of this asymmetric dome, which houses a five-storey indoor garden and a 40-metre-tall waterfall, required a level of geometric precision that pushes the boundaries of modern digital construction.
The project relied on parametric BIM workflows to coordinate the fabrication and installation of over 9,000 unique glass panels. Each structural member was digitally tracked from the factory to its precise coordinate on the roof, ensuring that the “Rain Vortex” oculus was perfectly centered. This “File-to-Factory” integration minimized waste and ensured that the complex steelwork could be assembled with minimal on-site adjustment.
By simulating environmental factors—such as humidity for the indoor forest and the acoustics of the waterfall—within the digital model, the project team ensured a harmonious interior environment. Jewel stands as a global benchmark for how digital engineering enables the construction of “impossible” geometries.
